To Fight Abortion We Don’t Need 1 Religious Argument

The other day I found on IG a podcast episode called “Be pro-life.” I decided to listen to it. This account is supposed to be founded on biblical teachings, and to talk truth to women.

At the very beginning of the conversation, the guest, who called herself catholic, said that even though she did great research and she understands why the church is pro-life, in her pro-life movement she has never once used a religious argument.

She said, “it’s ok to have religious arguments with religious people, but with secular people, we need to use scientific or philosophical arguments or arguments based on the law,” I said WHAAAAT?!!!

I continued listening to the podcast to hear her arguments. They’re good and very valid, however, there is a red flag in her teaching.

This account, with 75.7k followers, that supposedly teaches based on Christian principles, promoted the false notion that the Scripture doesn’t have authority by itself. That we need something besides the Bible to explain why abortion is wrong.

I am not against secular arguments at all. I believe God has given great minds and intelligence to both believers and non-believers. And many non-Christians have strong beliefs against abortion. But I do have an issue with a podcast claiming to be “based on biblical principles and teaching women the truth,” endorsing a guest who makes this kind of statement.

This statement is a very dangerous and subtle lie. Believing we can’t use religious arguments with secular people is to believe that the Bible doesn’t have the power or the authority to convince people.

The truth is that the only reason we can start making an argument against abortion is because God values human life.

The Bible teaches us He created us in his own image. Gen. 1:27

He is the one who forms the baby inside of the mother’s womb. Isaiah 49:5, Psalm 139:13.

He knows the baby’s name and gives him or her purpose before is born. Isaiah 49:1b.

God will not be associated with a government that brings on misery by its laws. He will destroy those who condemn the innocent to death. Psalm 94:20-23

Moreover, we say life starts at conception. But the Bible clearly says even before we’re conceived, God knows us and has a calling for us. Jeremiah 1:4,5.

Isaac, Samson, John the Baptist, and the most important and significant one, our Lord Jesus, are examples that God knows us even before conception.

Before we start to debate any topic, we need to see what the Bible says, even though it’s tempting to think we need to use secular arguments to make sense to unbelievers.

We must remember the Bible says: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Tim. 3:16-17. That means we are equipped through the Scripture to discuss issues like abortion.

And also, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Heb. 4:12. Pro-choice arguments are born from a sinful nature, and only God can bring light and conviction to people.

Any valid argument that could help us fight the battle against abortion is accepted and welcome. But we must not buy the lie that “religious,” meaning biblical arguments lack authority. All the contrary, it’s because of them we know we’re fighting on the right side.

I encourage you today to read your Bible, to memorize it. Spend time on the Word of God. Only then, we’ll be able to identify the subtle lies Satan wants us to believe about it and fight back.
